Two swimming pools now sit on the grassy banks surrounding the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The facilities are part of a larger hospitality structure that connects directly to the paddock building via a cable car.
The expansion includes rollercoasters and amusement rides studding the venue's skyline. This physical transformation marks a shift from the track's earlier days, when it faced potential removal from the Formula 1 calendar due to low attendance.
COTA has adopted a diversification strategy that blends a theme park, concert venue, and race track. The permanent circuit, designed by motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz, features run-off areas rather than concrete walls. Schwanz created the track layout, while Herman Tilke's company handled the buildings and infrastructure.
The circuit combines varying corner speeds with heavy braking zones and elevation changes. It stands apart from temporary street circuits in Miami and Las Vegas, which rely on barriers for safety. The Austin track is currently the most popular of the three US races among dedicated fans.
The venue has seen substantial changes since the first US Grand Prix in 2012. Landscaping has increased, and the surrounding areas are now filled with hospitality structures. The site also hosts the Lone Star Le Mans races for the World Endurance Championship and IMSA in September.
